Stay Comfortable
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation typically consists of a pill-based sedative medicine, which you’ll take about an hour before your appointment. Depending on the medicine, you may be asked not to eat or drink for up to 6 hours before your appointment.
The strong anti-anxiety sedative that you receive will reduce your level of consciousness. You will feel more calm and relaxed, and less anxious about your upcoming procedure. In addition, most patients begin to feel groggy once they’ve been sedated, and may even fall asleep during their procedure. Anterograde amnesia (forgetting what happened during your appointment) is also a common side effect of oral conscious sedation.
Oral conscious sedation usually lasts about 4-6 hours after your treatment before wearing off. That means you cannot drive yourself home or go back to work after being sedated, so you will need to plan accordingly.
Procedures That Require Sedation
When Is Sedation Recommended?
We often recommend sedation for patients who are undergoing oral surgery, such as wisdom teeth extractions, dental implant placements, and other invasive procedures. Combined with local numbing, sedation can help you feel more comfortable and ensures that you do not feel any pain or discomfort during your procedure. Sedation is also very useful if you are undergoing multiple dental procedures that may take several hours. It will make it easier for you to relax and stay still throughout your treatment.
For patients with severe dental anxiety, we may recommend sedation even for more minor dental treatments, such as filling a cavity, periodontal treatments for gum disease, or even teeth cleanings. In general, you can be sedated for almost any treatment at our office as long as you are healthy and Dr. Amin approves you for sedation.
Dealing With Dental Anxiety
Overcoming Your Fears
Dental anxiety is very common. About 15% of Americans have dental anxiety. In minor cases, this may just mean you don’t enjoy the process of going to the dentist. But more severe dental anxiety can cause nervousness and panic attacks, and prevent you from getting the dental care you need.
Sedation is a very helpful way to overcome these fears. In addition, it’s best to choose a dentist like Dr. Amin, who has years of experience treating patients with anxiety. Dr. Amin will take the time to discuss your anxiety with you, and help determine what is causing your dental anxiety. Then, he can take steps to make you feel more comfortable and safe during your treatment.
