What Does CEREC Stand For?
Understanding The Basics Of Same-Day Crowns
CEREC stands for CEramic REConstruction, and it’s a method of 3D CAD/CAM (computer-assisted design/manufacturing) dentistry. In this process, the entire crown procedure can be completed in just one day.
When placing a traditional crown, impressions are taken of your teeth and sent to a lab where your crown will be made. This means the process takes at least 2 appointments over a period of 2-3 weeks.
But this is not the case with CEREC. In this procedure, Dr. Ajay Amin will clean and prepare your tooth. Then, he will use a handheld scanner to capture a 3D image of your mouth, and upload it into a computer program.
Using this program, Dr. Amin will design your crown. Once the design is complete, the crown will be cut out of a solid block of porcelain using an in-office milling machine. Then, Dr. Amin will simply retrieve the crown, ensure it fits, and then bond it permanently onto your tooth. The entire process usually takes less than 2 hours.
The Benefits
Of CEREC Same-Day Crowns
Same-day crowns have a number of advantages compared to traditional crowns. Most obviously, they’re much more convenient. You don’t have to wait to get a permanent crown, and you can restore one or more teeth in just a single appointment.
There is also no need to wear a temporary resin crown. Temporary crowns are required to protect your trimmed tooth if you get a traditional crown, and they can be bulky and uncomfortable.
Also, you won’t need to have any impressions taken of your teeth using dental putty and trays. Some patients, particularly those with strong gag reflexes, find this process to be very uncomfortable. Because CEREC uses a handheld 3D scanner, there is no need for dental impressions to be taken.
