Understanding the basics
of implant-retained dentures
Traditional dentures are built to fit over your gums, and are held in place with friction. Implant-retained dentures, on the other hand, are designed to attach to a series of dental implants, which are metal rods that are surgically placed into your jaw and gum tissue.
Over time, the implants heal and bond with your jaw bone. Then, a set of dentures can be made that attaches securely to the implants. Implant-retained dentures have a very tight hold, and will never move or shift.
The Benefits
Of implant-retained dentures
The biggest benefit of implant-retained dentures is that they look and feel more natural, compared to traditional dentures. This is because they are made of durable, tooth-like materials, and attach permanently to your implants, so they never shift and move. You’ll be able to smile, speak, eat, and chew with confidence.
Implant-retained dentures also help strengthen and support your jaw bone. When you lose a tooth, the bone beneath the missing tooth is no longer strengthened by chewing and biting. This results in the loss of bone material over time, even if you wear dentures. But the implants used in implant-supported dentures stimulate the jaw bone just like natural teeth, which keeps your jaw bone strong and healthy.
what to expect
From the implant-retained dentures procesS
The process of getting implant-retained dentures begins with a consultation at our office. With a comprehensive oral exam, Dr. Ajay Amin will determine if you’re a good candidate for treatment. If you’re approved, you may need additional surgical treatments like teeth extractions, bone grafting, or jaw bone smoothing (alveoloplasty). Dr. Amin will discuss these in further detail with you if they are required.
Next, you’ll schedule your surgical treatment at our office. Dr. Amin will clean and numb your mouth, and surgically place a series of 4-6 dental implants in each arch of your mouth.
After this, you will get a set of temporary dentures to wear. Dr. Amin will send you home to heal and recover. It may take up to 4-6 months for your implants to bond with your jaw bone. You will come back into our office for several follow-ups to ensure your mouth is healing properly. Dr. Amin will also take impressions and measurements of your mouth to begin making your permanent set of implant-retained dentures.
Once your mouth has fully healed, you’ll come back into our office for your final appointment at Lighthouse Dental. Dr. Amin will check the fit of your permanent implant-retained dentures, and ensure they look and feel perfect. Then, your new teeth will be attached, and Dr. Amin will provide you with care instructions for your smile. You’ll go home with a brand-new set of teeth that look and feel completely natural.
